The Volkswagen Caddy Maxi is a practical commercial van for tradespeople, delivery businesses, mobile technicians and service professionals. Although its compact size makes it easy to drive around Sydney, the extended cargo area provides valuable space for tools, equipment and everyday deliveries.
Like any working van, however, an unprotected cargo area can quickly collect scratches, dents, marks and dirt. For this project, Sydney Van Lining upgraded a Volkswagen Caddy Maxi LWB with model-specific flooring and wall panels, creating a stronger, cleaner and more professional workspace.
The completed Volkswagen Caddy Maxi van lining package combines WBP-grade laminated birch plywood flooring with lightweight polypropylene wall panels. Together, these components provide practical protection for the cargo floor and exposed metal surfaces while making the van easier to clean and maintain.
Preparing the Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Cargo Area
Before the installation, the Caddy Maxi had an exposed metal cargo area that offered limited protection against tools, boxes and equipment. Daily loading and unloading can gradually damage the original floor and side walls, particularly around door openings, wheel arches and other high-contact areas.
The objective of this project was to create a durable commercial interior without unnecessarily reducing the van’s useful cargo space. Each flooring and wall panel component was prepared specifically for the Volkswagen Caddy Maxi, helping achieve a neat fit around the shape of the cargo area.
This model-specific approach also creates a more professional finish than generic plywood sheets that need to be measured, trimmed and adjusted during installation.
WBP Grade Laminiated Birch Plywood Flooring for Commercial Use
The foundation of the fit-out is a precision-cut floor manufactured from approximately 12.5mm WBP-grade laminated birch plywood.
WBP stands for Weather and Boil Proof, referring to the water-resistant adhesive used between the plywood layers. Birch plywood also has a dense and consistent internal structure, making it suitable for commercial vans that regularly carry tools, storage systems and work equipment.
The upper surface features a durable black HPL laminate with a textured anti-slip finish. This provides improved grip when accessing the cargo area and creates a practical surface for everyday commercial use. Cargo should still be correctly secured during transport, even when an anti-slip floor is installed.
A moisture-resistant laminate on the underside adds another layer of protection, while the smooth finished surface makes dust, dirt and minor spills easier to remove than they would be from an exposed metal floor or unfinished timber.
The floor sections are joined using aluminium extrusions where required, helping create a secure and consistent finish. Protective trims can also be installed around high-wear entry points and rear edges to reduce chipping and extend the working life of the flooring.
Lightweight Polypropylene Wall Panel Protection
To complement the Volkswagen Caddy Maxi flooring, polypropylene panels were installed across the cargo-area side walls.
These approximately 7mm Polypropylene panels use a lightweight honeycomb-core construction that combines impact resistance with flexibility. This allows the panels to follow the shape of the van interior while adding minimal unnecessary weight.
The wall panels protect the original metal surfaces from common types of commercial wear, including scratches from toolboxes, marks from loose equipment and minor knocks during loading. Their black finish also gives the cargo area a clean and consistent appearance.
Compared with unfinished plywood wall panels, polypropylene is low maintenance and does not require painting or additional surface treatment. The material can be wiped clean, making it suitable for tradespeople, couriers, service technicians and businesses that need to keep their vehicles presentable.
Depending on how the van is used, customers can select lower wall protection, upper wall panels, rear-door panels or a more complete lining package.
